CHIPBOARD RELIEF PRINTMAKING
Instructor: Eileen Foti
This hands-on printmaking workshop will focus on the Chipboard Relief technique, an inexpensive, non-toxic printmaking process that can be successfully completed with or without the use of a press. It can be simplified for kindergarten students to enjoy, but can also be sophisticated enough to be used by professional artists. A sketch is transferred onto an ordinary sheet of chipboard and then cut into either "jigsaw puzzle" or overlapping pieces. The pieces are rolled up with waterbased inks, registered together, and printed by hand or on a press. Where two colors overlap, a third color is created. This technique is perfect for home studios and classrooms that are not equipped with ventilation, as cleanup can be done with soap and water. $75.00 includes all materials.
THE MAKERSPACE CLASSROOM
Instructors: Rachel Brusky and Chris Fleischl
In this unique workshop, we will explore the intersection of art, design, and technology in a Makerspace setting. Over the course of the day, participants will be presented with an arts-inspired challenge and encouraged to tinker, experiment, and tap into their creativity. For the challenge, groups of two workshop members will be asked to invent a unique musical instrument or an interactive art piece using Makey Makey, recycled materials, and other surprising elements. Workshop participants will learn the basics of 3-D design using Tinkercad and how 3-D printing can be used to enhance and mature their creative projects. Through the challenges presented in the class you will not only learn new forms of technology, but will come to see yourself as a problem solver and an innovator. Workshop participants are encouraged to start a Tinkercad account before the workshop and go through the basic tutorials on the website. $99.00 includes all materials. Register here! (lunch included).
MOSAICS: MAKING PICTURES FROM LITTLE PIECES
Instructor: Donna Conklin-King
Learn the exciting art of mosaics. Design, cut, glue and grout vitreous glass tiles to complete an original 6” x 8” work ready for framing. Bring in a very simple design idea, or pick on of the designs provided in class. We will briefly review the different types of mosaic tiles available to use, and the different methods of application: Direct, Indirect, Double-reverse and Picasiette. Students will leave with a list of materials needed to create their own mosaics, as well as some ideas for lesson plans designed to introduce younger students to this art form. $75.00 includes all materials.8 participant maximum.
OIL PAINTING: A BRUSH WITH CREATIVITY
Instructor: Kit Sailer
Come back for one day to get a new painting off the ground, trouble shoot one in progress, or put the finishing touches on a painting that you never quite got around to completing. We will review the basics of laying out, blocking in, developing form and adding detail. All supplies are provided. Participants will work on table easels. Remember to bring your smock, at least one reference to work from, and your imagination! $75.00 includes all materials.
POETRY
Instructor: Peter Murphy
This workshop is designed for those who are new to poetry as well as veterans who have been writing for years. Using contemporary poems as models, Peter's quirky prompts will help participants trigger their imaginations and write more freely as they compose original work that is surprising, meaningful and true. Supportive feedback will enhance the sound and sense of these new poems. Teachers will return to their classrooms armed with strategies for improving their students’ writing proficiency. $75.00.
SONGWRITING
Instructor: Hector Morales
Experience the magical process of creating a song while becoming acquainted with traditional and current technologies that will spark your music making as well as your student's. We will play with words, music structures, different styles, pencil and paper, as well as music loops to create original songs that best express our feelings, philosophies and dreams. You do not need to have previous experience in music or technology to join this workshop, although previous knowledge in these areas is welcome. $75.00.
VIDEO NARRATIVES
Instructor: Carla Moriatry
This workshop will show ways to illustrate the narrative through images. Whether we explore the lyrics of a song or the lines in a poem we visualize in our heads what the words are saying to us. When we find images to match these words we are able to authenticate them and creatively connect to them with deeper understanding. Using iMovie for iPad or Mac, teachers will learn to create a video narrative to help students connect to the imagery of words though video and music. iPads will be provided for each participant.
